Outbound is the same problem it was a decade ago: get the right prospect on the line, say something useful in the first 8 seconds, and book the meeting. The tactics have shifted. The principles haven't.
The 8-second rule
Connect-to-disconnect data across 500k VLMS-Group calls shows pickup decisions land between seconds 4 and 8. If your opener hasn't delivered value in that window, the call is gone. Our top-performing voice agents open with a single, specific value claim, not a name, not a company.
Pacing rules that actually work
- Never call the same number twice in 24h
- First 3 attempts: spread across morning, midday, late-afternoon
- After 3 misses: cool off 7 days
- After 6 misses total: drop from the campaign
Disposition taxonomy
If you can't track outcomes, you can't optimize. We use 12 disposition codes, 'booked', 'qualified-not-now', 'callback-requested', 'dnc', 'voicemail-dropped', and 8 others. The taxonomy maps cleanly to HubSpot, Salesforce, and Pipedrive.
Most teams use 3-4 disposition codes. They lose the entire middle of the funnel, the soft 'not now' that becomes a deal in 60 days.
