Five prompt patterns that make voice agents feel human

After listening to 50k voice-agent calls across our customer base, the same patterns show up in the ones that feel natural, and the same anti-patterns show up in the ones that don't. Here are the five we steal from human reps.

1. Discovery-first

Bad agents pitch in the first 5 seconds. Good agents ask a clarifying question before pitching. The pattern: 'Quick question before I share anything, are you the right person for X?' This single move lifts qualified-conversion by 18%.

2. Mirror-back

Repeat the customer's words verbatim before responding. 'So you're looking for X by Y, did I get that right?' Three benefits: confirms understanding, gives the LLM a second pass at context, makes the customer feel heard.

3. Soft transfer

Never blind-transfer. Always brief the receiving human first: 'I'm bringing in our specialist. Just so you know, the caller is interested in X and prefers Y.' Drops customer-frustration scores by 40%.

4. Gentle disagreement

Customers will sometimes assert things that aren't true ('your competitor said your product does Z'). Bad agents agree. Good agents say: 'That's interesting, my understanding is slightly different. Could be worth checking. Either way, here's what we offer...'

5. Graceful handoff

When the agent reaches a limit, it should name it honestly: 'I want to make sure you get the right answer. Let me hand you to a human who can look at your account directly.' This is better than fumbling for 3 turns.
